A series of photographs of a body cast of Saartjie Baartman, a Khoi woman from the Cape who was brought from African to Europe at the end of the eighteenth century and put on public display for continental audiences seeking exotica. Upon her death, Baartman’s body was cast and her sexual organs preserved for the sake of ‘science’. Siopis’ photographs of the cast in storage in the Museum of Man in Paris are testament to the impact of colonialism on displacement and home. The Griqua people of South Africa have unsuccessfully lobbied for the return of Baartman’s remains for proper burial on Robben Island.
